Things are starting to improve a lot with the series. The background of the café is becoming a more solid concept and the characters are really coming into their own. As someone who has never been to a themed café, I instead am starting to think of it as akin to Disney world, where breaking character is a cardinal sin for the performers. Framing it in that light definitely has helped me digest the happenings without finding it to be too ridiculous. The comedy still manages to come through.

And we're finally starting to see some of the romance peek in. The characters are developing nicely. I'm enjoying this more and more.

I hated this volume. In the last book, Miman built this really nice foundation between Hime and Yano just to completely ignore Yano for a knockoff version, like what??? I don't give a shit about Kanoko (knockoff Yano). At first, I shipped her with Tachibana (the stoic megane) because it seemed like they were going for a Megane/Tsundere relationship, but Kanoko is mean to everybody. She's conniving, annoying, and she takes non-consensual photos of Hime and touches her while she's sleeping like all the time. IT'S NOT OKAY! Kanoko is obsessed with Hime. She acts wimpy around other women and refuses to talk to them. She says she wants Hime to be happy because she "loves" her or whatever, but then she does everything in her power to sabotage Hime's relationships with other girls. Not to mention, Kanoko thinks lowly of literally every woman who isn't Hime. Her internalized misogyny is boundless and it makes it really hard to read from her point of view when she's antagonizing everyone behind their backs. Maybe something got lost in translation, but it felt like Miman had no idea where they wanted to go with this arc. They shouldn't have put so much focus on Kanoko, especially so soon after Hime rebuilt her relationship with Yano. I'll keep reading, but I hate it here right now.

Stars: 3.5 Stars
Format: Print
Series: Incomplete
Steam Level: Not Steamy

Note: minor spoilers, though if you’re reading a review for volume 3, I don’t think they are big spoilers

Not my favorite installment, there wasn’t enough Hime and Yano in this one for me. It’s not bad and it moves the plot along.

Quick Thoughts:
- Though I enjoy the character Kanoko. and this volume mostly focused on her, I wasn’t jazzed with this
- While this kind of pinning isn’t a storyline I enjoy, I’m glad it isn’t a one chapter thing that doesn’t really get mentioned again
- The book mentioned in the Salon that Kanoko looks up later is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin and the spoof with zombies is a real thing (though it was a book before it was a movie) called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith, if you were wondering
- We get Kanoko’s backstory with Hime and better insight into Kanoko who isn’t just this painfully shy person
- Not much of Hime and Yano which is a shame, those parts really seem to shine

Overall not thrilled with this one but happy that the creator took her time with this story plot. It could have easily been a gag or brushed off but it wasn’t so that was cool

Updated reread on 6/4/2020:

Bumped up from 4 to 5 stars.

Not much I want to add from my original review, other than I think this volume's a lot better than I initially gave it credit for. The drama is top tier without being over the top like most shoujo manga and the characters are a blast to read. This has been a fun rereading experience!

Original review posted 5/27/19:

Ohhh, the drama! The juicy, juicy, drama! I have to say, I'm starting to enjoy characters that embrace the worse parts of their personality (or at least acknowledge them). And I really do like HIme for being as expressive and open with her emotions as she is. Granted, I'd love to see her develop into a person that kind better hide the worse parts of herself, but I would never want to see them leave entirely. Also, her choosing to drop out of the running for Blume and acknowledging Yano's growth was a big leap in character development and I loved it. I am super curious about Sumika's backstory and hope to get more of it in the next volume. Really enjoying this series, can't wait for the next volume!

This one was very Kanoko-centric, and I don't really like her as much.
