I received a copy of Still my Tessa by Sylv Chiang and illustrated by Mathias Ball from Scholastic Canada in exchange for an honest review.
All Evelyn wants is to play with Tessa, who is different this summer. Tessa prefers to spend time along in their room but Evelyn finds ways to connect with her sibling again. Evelyn learns to call Tessa by their new pronouns - and it only takes a week to learn it and use it properly - something that their parents continue to struggle with. But Evelyn is determined to help her parents learn how to properly address Tessa and speaks up for her sibling as others in the community make innocent - but inaccurate - observations or remarks.
This is a beautiful picture book about siblings and the education around gender identity. In this story, Evelyn is an ally for Tessa, one that stands up for Tessa to their parents and their community. Evelyn learns the right pronouns to call Tessa and also the ways in which she can support her sibling. It is a great story for readers to learn how to be kind and effective as an ally, in a way that supports and does not harm.
