This is my first JP Delany book and I've been so excited to read these book so when I saw this in a charity shop I jumped on it.
This took me a little over a day to read, the short chapters made it really easy and it was a nice quick read.
I really liked Patrick he's was so smart and sweet.
I didn't like Claire, there was something a little unstable about her from the start.
Kathryn and Frank I'm not too sure how I felt about them because of the way it was laid out.
I wasn't a fan of Henry he just seemed so strange.
I got so far and wasn't sure how it was going to end because there was too much book for what I had figured out... And I doubled back on my thoughts multiple times trying to figure out what was going, who was the killer, how the police fit into the story and how the story would eventually pan out.
I was metaphorically on the edge of my seat, dieing to know what was going to happen and how it would end. I'm so excited to read more by the author

Believe Me is a stunning psychological thriller that will leave you gasping for breath until the very last page! It is not very often that I can't pick up on the foreshadowing or just see right through plot twists. However, this book had me so completely engrossed that I wasn't sure what was happening until it was over.
J. P. Delaney's Believe Me takes you on a journey (or a rollercoaster that malfunctions at the top, leaving your feet dangling over the edge and scream caught in your throat before it pummels to the earth) with Claire and her quest to find the truth about a murder victim. As an actress she goes undercover for the police but finds herself so caught up in the role that it becomes hard to differentiate from what is the character she's playing and her real self.
I'm still shaking inside trying to wrap my head around how this novel played out. The writing is brilliant, the twists are shocking and the characters are well developed; everything you could ask for!
I was offered an advanced reader copy of Believe Me from netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

"Some guys, the gray takes hold of them, and they can't make it let go..." This was an example of a great psychological thriller. The author writes so well, you play into the mind games. I found myself questioning what was really happening and doubting who was really guilty. It was a great new concept of using an troubled actress to try and catch a killer. But who is telling the truth and who is playing a game? This was a novel that had me calling my friends after every new plot twist. The author excelled in plot and character development. It was so well written, it leaves wanting more and doubting your own thoughts and conclusions. This a psychological masterpiece. Thanks to Ballantine Books and Penguin Random House for the ARC and chance to review.
Believe Me by J.P. Delaney, is the second novel under the pseudonym. You all know how much I loved 'The Girl Before' last year and I seriously couldn't wait to get my hands on his next novel. So much so, that I couldn't wait a year for it to come out in paperback so I bought it in hardback.
However, it's quite different to his previous novel. There was still his signature style of writing (which I love), and the creepiness in the book is outstanding. I also must mention, that I loved the way it was written, a lot of people have said that they didn't like it but you just need to read between the lines I think. It's written like a script, hence it being based around one of the main characters, Claire, who we see trying to gain a career in acting.
The way Delaney has captured obsession and passion is perfect, it shows how very fine the line is between the two and I loved it. As I mentioned, the book is different to the one before, its quirky, though it does take a while to understand and get into it I think. Then like a train has just ran into you, the entire story picks up pace and just snowballs and snowballs until you're left shocked. As always, I had no idea about the ending and it was a complete shock!
An enjoyable, creepy read that is a must have for any Thriller enthusiast.

25 year old British drama student Claire had been through a lot for someone her age.
To escape her past she moved to New York and enrolled in a prestigious acting school to get a step closer to her dream of becoming an Actress.
Due to her immigration status she's unable to hold a "real" job but lands a role of an easy pick-up to entrap straying husbands for a firm of divorce lawyers for cash in hand.
When one of her targets becomes the suspect of a murder investigation, the police ask Claire to use her acting skills to help lure their suspect into a confession. "It's about immersing yourself in the emotional truth of a part until it's part of you".. And then the lines get blurred. Very blurred.
Trust no-one.
JP Delaney gone done it again! 5/5 🌟

There's not a lot I can say about this fast-paced thriller, except Delaney will take everything you assume and turn it on its head so many times. There is a special talen to misdirection, clever plot twists, and big reveals. I am tricked almost every time by Delaney. Even the things I thought I knew for certain, there was all this doubt thrown on top of it. Believe Me completely captivated me. I binge read it a day, which says a lot, but also I basically was late to an event because I had to finish it.

25-year-old Claire is a struggling actress in New York, trying to get by without a green card. One source of income she has, and a job she's good at, is using her acting abilities for a divorce attorney to catch out cheating husbands. When Claire is hired for a different type of role, somebody ends up dead the next day and a murder mystery/hunt for a serial killer begins..
I'm a bit conflicted about this book, I have to say. There were some parts I truly liked and others that didn't gel with me at all. Yet, I could not put this book down and I started to really not have a clue what would happen in it.
I do find the entire plot of this book to be slightly unbelievable the length of the undercover operation using a civilian AND one that had to actually sleep with the suspect is a bit cagey for me. I find it hard believing such things could really happen, and if they did, it would be with a highly trained undercover agent - not a penniless actress, no matter how pretty she is .
The character Claire herself I found extremely unlikable. All her bad decisions all seemed to stem straight from her childhood in foster care (this book definitely doesn't have anything good to say about the foster care system either - if I was a foster parent reading this, it would probably be a bit insulting). She never really seemed to actually help herself and some of the things she was apparently 'running away' from in England were not actually big deals.
I did really enjoy the serial killer parts of this story, and I think the way the author used the poetry of Charles Baudelaire in such a dark, twisty way was kind of genius. There were so many ways I would have liked the story to go, and I think that's because now again I enjoy a really f***ed up story. So ultimately I was left a bit disappointed.
I just have really mixed feelings about this book and there are some points in the story that the plot line feels really weak. But as I said, I was hooked and I think that has to be a good thing!

Sleek, stylish and sophisticated, and that’s just the cover! Believe Me is a dark tale, seductive and twisted in its telling. I flew through this novel in about 4 hours, it was such an addictive read.
The brilliance of this novel was the art of its deception, Claire is an actress and she really is playing the deadliest role of her life; and it’s so hard to read her character, where does the actress end and Claire begin, are they separate or one entity. Due to these blurred lines you never really get to know Claire, and that’s why this novel works so well – it’s got this mysterious aura you can’t quite grasp and so you struggle to predict the direction of the plot. This novel would also appeal to fans of the unreliable narrator, I love the extremes Delaney goes to, this novel destroys the boundaries of believability, but I didn’t care because I was thoroughly entertained!
I enjoyed the mix of narration styles used in this novel, telling small parts in script form was very fitting as Claire is an actress. I must admit, the small amounts of poetry that featured was completely lost on me, because I didn’t understand it at all. But I got the sexy, yet sinister, tones it added to the overall feel of the novel.
If you enjoyed Delaney’s previous novel, The Girl Before, you’ll enjoy this one too – that same shocking deceitfulness is present in this novel too. There’s something so fresh about the way Delaney writes, he toys with darker, sinister emotions/actions, but it’s done through clean, smooth prose, and this contrast works really well, which it why you’ll see this novel describes as sleek and sophisticated. Believe Me is full of suspense, very well-written, sleek in delivery, dark in nature, a psychological thriller I highly recommend.
*My thanks to the publisher (Quercus) for providing me with a copy of this book*
