It is Aref’s last week in Muscat before he moves to Michigan for three years. He spends most of his time with his grandfather having adventures and making memories to hold on to until he can return.

This book contains the best literary grandpa ever. Seriously, once he enters the story, I loved The Turtle of Oman. Before he comes along, I was a little bored and slightly annoyed by Aref. But Sidi makes up for any problems I might have had with the book. The only problem is that it takes him too long to show up. Anywho, he's fantastic, and I also loved reading about Oman, which is somewhere that I previously knew nothing about.

Another pre-read for my kiddo. A cute story about a boy coming to terms of moving across the world. Loved the family’s way of fostering learning by making it a game of “discoveries” (ahem might steal that idea) and Aref’s relationship with his grandfather.

This was a good read about Aref struggling with his feelings about moving to the United States from Oman. We got to see what life is like for him living in Oman through all the adventures he got to go one with his grandfather or Sidi, before his flight. Some parts dragged on and others kept the kids engaged. It’s a good read aloud when doing a Middle East unit study!

I've read a number of books about kids traveling to and adapting to new countries, but I think this is the first I've read about a kid preparing to leave and I did love it.
