Tried to read and like Louis Lamour. Not wild about this first in the Sacket’s series.

This is the first (chronologically, not in order of publication) of Louis L'Amour's sixteen novels about various members of the Sackett family, and their lives from the 16th through the 20th centuries. It follows the adventures of the founder of that fictional family, Barnabas Sackett, as he makes his way from the British Isles to the new world. If you like L'Amour's other novels, you will like this one. If you don't, I'm sorry for you!

While this book is chronologically the first book of the 17-book Sackett series, it is more a pirate story than a western. Serving as a prologue to the series, it was actually written later than many of the others.

This short book is a fun frontier story written in a straight forward manner. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did and I was able to speed through it.

Set during the time when most of America was still wild. The adventure of a man making his own destiny. A fun and inspiring tale.

It’s been a long while since I read a L’Amour tale. What a storyteller!

It was....well, it was. I was not particularly impressed by this. I don't know if it is the genre or the theme. Now I've enjoyed books set in the 14th-16th centuries in the  past, but this one was just blah. It seemed a little bit too easy for Sackett. People just trusted him without really knowing him at all. I didn't understand that. I'm not going to continue the series. It just was not for me.
