Book 5: Biggest thing I wish they hadn’t gotten rid of in the movie was probably Professor Mcgonagall awesomely rebelling against Umbridge in saying she’d help Harry become an Auror. That was such a good scene!!!! Also the final scene... 😭😭😭

Some parts were somewhat anticlimactic especially Sirius’ death but still enjoyable.
I loved loved loved Ginny, Luna and Neville in this one, they really got to stand in the limelight this time and they shone brightly. Their whole little group was so fun to read about, I really liked all their dynamics. Except Harry and Cho, but that was the whole point. Umbridge was physically painful to witness, she single handedly stirred up all my school-time hatred. Gold star for her (I poisoned it)
It irks me that the three main adults around Harry are not acting like adults. I probably notice this more now as an adult myself but Dumbledore, Snape and Sirius are not acting like the responsible adults they are supposed to be for Harry. Sirius treats him like a peer despite being a supposed authority figure for him. He’s 15! You’re the only parental figure he has left! And he’s NOT your dead best friend! Stop confusing the poor kid. I honestly believe Sirius is utterly unfit to be a parent, there are instances where Harry even acts like the reasonable adult in their dynamic and I won’t stand for this adultification. Sirius is reckless, pouty and acts like a child.
Speaking of man children, Snape really got on my nerves as well. I get that he’s supposed to act the part of a death eater but his distaste for children and especially Harry is honestly going way too far. He’s essentially doing the same thing as Sirius: he’s equating Harry with James. But he’s NOT James and he deserves to be treated fairly regardless who his parents are!! While Harry had no right to look into Snape’s memory, his outburst at the fifteen year old he berates for breathing too loudly is an overreaction. He has a right to be angry, to be hurt, but TALK TO THE DAMN CHILD. Be the bigger person!!! You ARE the bigger person !!!!!!!
Both Sirius and Snape genuinely never outgrew their 15 year old selves.
I believe Snape and Sirius are a product of their generation. They lived through the first wizarding war as teenagers and never really got to mature past it.
Dumbledore is a more nuanced issue… but that entire monologue in the last two chapters had me gesticulating wildly in incomprehension. Are you trying to traumatize this child more than he already is ??? I’m baffled at how he ended up working in education. Someone send this man to a de-escalation workshop asap
The adults in this entire story are realistic, but I don’t want their behavior to be normalized. There are special circumstances of course, them being at war and all but I don’t like how the story tends to justify their actions instead of explaining them. Snape being bullied and drawing the parallel between him and Harry is interesting and it shows why Snape doesn’t like Harry and acts like he does. It gives Harry (and us as the readers) a new, unseen perspective on James and Lily. James and Sirius were little bullying pricks. Lupin was enabling them, siding with them through inaction. Lily, in the little we’ve seen of her, acted in the best way she could have. But that doesn’t mean Snape gets to bully children himself just because he was bullied when he was 15.
Sirius is discussed in a more nuanced way by Molly, Hermione and Dumbledore. Yes, he was fun and a cool godfather for Harry, but he was also cruel to Kreacher, he was a bully in his teens who never chose to grow up (however hindered by the circumstances as he may have been) and blamed his teenage godson for not being the carbon copy of the father Harry has never truly known. Sirius was morally grey character, but he’s actually seen as such. Snape I am hoping to see discussed in the next book.
I’m going to make enemies with this review but I needed to get it all out of my system.
Peace out

this book genuinely makes me weep every time i read it. the death of my favorite character actually is a knife to the chest for me. umbridge stays being my least favorite villain !!!
order of the phoenix gives you insight into voldemort and harry’s connection & why they’re so intertwined. it also gives you more info into primary side characters, such a sirius and snape. it really sets up the last two books in terms of plot in my opinion.

Honestly out of all the books this one was my favorite by far. Absolutely heart wrenching.
