IDK, I was just kind of bored by it. Read closer to middle grade than YA.

Very slow at the beginning but pick up pretty quick. Looking forward to the next book.

Damn this was awful! Flat caricature characters, no plot, incomplete/unrealized world building, no deeper themes and a magic system almost keeping it afloat. Two stars might be too kind.

My Gooooood the world building!!! The whole world feels so unique and is still so easy to grasp while reading it's insane. I'd say the characters and the writing in general are just a tiny bit flat but not so much that it bothered me and I was distracted by trying to imagine all of the cool architecture and locations anyways. Also: this being Ann Sei Lins first published book justifies most of the minor flaws in my opinion. The book felt very addictive to me, so much so that I read it on every 5min bus journey I had <3
Beware that it is farely short and ends on a cliffhanger, so buying the second book simultaneously is probably a very good idea :)

This book was a fun ride! It reminded me heavily of Studio Ghibli's Castle in the Sky mixed with the Mortal Engines books. This book is definitely appropriate for younger teens. No romantic subplot, just a girl trying to save her friend and a master teaching her how to use her powers. The violence and death is fairly low for this style adventure book.

The paper Crafting gave me Spirited Away vibes. I loved the plot twists and battle sequences. I loved the friendships the main female character made. I'm excited to see where the story goes from here!

Content Warning: betrayal, murder (of beings made from paper and two humans. The human deaths happen quickly: one dies from essentially an explosion but the other has their throat sliced and blood gushing is mentioned.)

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reader copy of this book. This review is voluntarily written and the thoughts and opinions contained in this review are my own.
