The pros:
- Interesting world
- Cool magic
- A few lovely characters
- Lots of action/very fast moving plot

The not so great:
- Needed more editing
- Clunky/juvenile writing

I really wanted to love this - the story and the world are so interesting and fun, but it wasn't executed very well. The writing is stilted and awkward, especially when attempting to solidify the misogyny of the men. The internal monologues from several male POVs are exceptionally cringey, and high stakes moments lose their emotional momentum in the poor writing.

TBD on if I continue the series. I wouldn't try to persuade anyone out of reading it, and younger audiences probably won't notice much of what bogged it down for me; a disappointing read for me, though.

Just didn’t capture my attention

I really enjoyed this one. Elements of found family, a deep & loyal friendship, a main character with a fighting spirit, and a crew that brings experience and betrayal.

This is classed as YA, but for some reason it read middle grade to me which I absolutely loved. Kurara and Haru have a strong friendship and a history that goes back beyond what Kurara remembers. The separation of sky people and land dwellers called groundlings is severe and is portrayed really well when Kurara joins the ship that hunts Shinigami.

I really love an author who can give me characters that I can instantly know that I am going to root for. Add in court intrigue and royal familial strife and I'm all in. Can't wait for the next installment.
