a jolly good time

This is higher than 3 stars but I couldn’t give it an accurate review because I skim read it to see if it would be good to read to my Y9s in this next school year. A more accurate review to come once I’ve read it with them.

I think the fantasy elements were really fun and whimsical.

Firstly, thank you to @tandemcollectiveuk, @walkerbooksuk, @walkerbooksya and @annseilin1 for allowing me the opportunity to take part in the #rebelskiesreadalong.

(My review is honest)

Rebel Skies is an absolutely wonderful debut! The extremely unique and imaginative world Sei Lin has created immediately piqued my interest. I'm a huge fan of Studio Ghibli and this book felt akin to a Ghibli film. You've got Crafters who can control ofuda (paper) in all sorts of ways, giant origami beasts and sky cities. I mean if I could choose any superpower it would definitely be Crafting after reading this book!

The story also kept us on our toes with tons of action and plot twists. I loved the friendship between Kurara and Haru and I'm really interested to see where that leads and to find out more about their past. There's plenty of mystery left!

I've given this book 3.5/5⭐ because I would have loved to have seen some more character building and relationship/friendship building between the characters (especially Kurara and Himura). Whereas the world building went into exquisite detail, I didn't feel this with the characters. I would have loved it if the story slowed down a little and we saw more of Kurara's training with Himura. It also felt a tiny bit rushed at the end and I did predict what would happen in a way but this could all be part of Sei Lin's long game and I am excited to see where the story will go.

All-in-all a truly delightful debut brimming with magic. I would definitely recommend this for someone new to fantasy or a younger YA reader as I feel it's a great introduction to the fantasy genre!

Rebel Skies is the first book in a series by Ann Sei Lin. This book is an action filled first installment that introduces a unique magic system. Kurara, a girl with the ability to magically control paper, goes on a journey of self-discovery as she seeks to save her friend Haru. From the airships, to the paper shikigami, to the levitated sky-cities, the world building is exquisite. We are seeing this world through Kurara's eyes and discovering secrets about her past and that of the other paper crafters. All the characters felt like real people, well realized and dimensional. There are multiple point of views but they serve to further the story and reveal more about the characters and their motivations.

This is appropriately categorized between middle-grade and YA. There are many unanswered questions at the end of the story and I does end on a bit of a cliffhanger. I will be looking forward to the next installment in the series.
