My strongest influence towards anything anime and manga would have to be from my kids. I learnt all about the Ghibli productions, how to slay demons and being in a family of spy (the only ones I know as I have been forced to watch and end up liking them) from them. Therefore, I can’t deny that ‘Rebel Skies’ has all that you want from a manga or anime, and it is worth to be animated or filmed. My most favourite part would have to be the fighting sequences especially the one between Kurara and her so-called mentor, Himura; ughh, chef’s kiss!

This book would be the first from a trilogy series, therefore, do not fret at the ending (because I can’t wait to know what would happen). Rest assured, another two would follow suit.

It’s a story about a troubled empire, Mikoshima, where the sky was filled with airships, sky whales and shikigami, the ferocious paper spirits; with its people divided into sky cities, groundlings, the Sorabitos and the Crafters.

Kurara, the main character, was a crafter who joined the crew of an airship hunting these paper spirits after a place she called home was destroyed in an attack by a shikigami - only then she did not realise the secrets that she herself carried with her. The only problem - she didn’t remember her past. There were so many unanswered questions that she made them her personal quests in searching for the answers. Along the way, she might have gained some fellow comrades, or were they her foes? Who can she really trust now when the person whom she had begun to trust had deceived her after all the promises made? The most important question, who she really was?

Though I have troubled with the earlier parts as they slowed me down, I promised it would get exciting throughout the story especially the sequences involving the shikigami’s attacks and fightings. Recommended read especially if you are a fan of fantasy reads, manga and anime.
