A fun read! I loved the setting; steampunk vibes with origami magic, what's not to like? The main character Kurara was great, she was so strong willed and I loved her determination. Her decisions always felt very grounded and in character. I didn't see the plot twist coming at all! I would have liked more depth to the story, I wasn't able to connect as much to the characters as I would have liked.

I was sent a copy of this book for free as part of LibraryThings early reviewers program.

The world in which the novel takes place is very cool. I quite liked the floating cities. It felt like it could be in a Studio Ghibli film. The use of paper as a form of magic was refreshing. The one thing that gave me pause with this book was the character development/character relationships. Outside of the little fox, I was not very invested in any of the characters. They all felt a little flat. That said, I assume we will learn more about them and watch them grow in the next book.

I'm not going to rate because I was confused. I might have done better if I had read instead of listened.

Fabulous concept with the magical crafting of paper, and a great action scene to kick the story off, but the dialogue and too many of the characters are really childish (as if written for ages 5 to 10). I was persevering, but then lost the will to continue when the MC, who had been a slave and knew full well that you don't publicly chastise a person in power, did just that - and there were no repercussions. Seriously?!
