Really really enjoyed this book. It would make a phenomenal movie. The audiobook is narrated by Jake Weber so I pictured him the whole time as the main character, and he has the best voice! This book would make a phenomenal movie.

2.5 stars

I was annoyed by the first half and entertained by the second half. It seemed more like a mad-hat caper than literary thriller to me.

Long long and long. A good story but a long way to get there.

How can you possibly write a review for this? Well, I'll try…
It was quite the rollercoaster ride, almost from the start. Marisha Pessl first book started out quite calm, only to pick up pace after page 300. This one did the opposite. The suspense kept building from the start, then kind of simmered out to end quite calmly. Now that was alright with me, because I was kind of dreading the prospect of anything too gory or gruesome.
Anyway, I really like Marisha Pessl's writing. From what I remember I loved her first book more, but I definitely enjoyed this one as well, will probably re-read it at some point, and I really look forward to seeing what she'll write next.

Also, there was an app for this book, which was really cool! The content it unlocked wasn't essential to the story, but it was a nice asset. It came with music, fake interviews, diary entries and even a children's story. But even without a smartphone, this book is already full of pictures, files and fake magazine articles. That's basically the Pessl-trademark, and with succes. She always does a great job at making a story feel very real by including lots of "evidence", book references, etc.

Anyway, I think thriller-fanatics might enjoy this story a little less, but it is definitely an edge-of-your-seat read for people used to calmer reads.

DID NOT FINISH

Audio format is not working for me on this one- I'm going to switch over and read this in print form instead at some point.

This is a long book and I really enjoyed the first three quarters of it. It's the last quarter that went off the rails for me and left me disappointed for investing so much time in it. The majority of the book was a four star book for me but I felt that it really unravelled toward the end. Interesting characters and it could make for a great movie if they edit and tidy up the ending.

It had me until the end of the book and then the last 10% totally lost me. Disappointing.

I would have liked it better if it was a bit more taut. Otherwise, liked the multimedia aspect. Would recommend reading this book on a tablet. Wanted to know what was around each corner.

If author Elizabeth Hand wrote a novelization of the podcast The Last Movie that featured a potentially Satanic David Lynch, it would be this novel. A little cliche at times? Yes, but it hit all the right buttons with some genuinely creepy moments.

My fellow book club members wanted to be pushed out of their comfort zone so I asked my for recommendations from friends and this is what came out of it. We all loved it. Our main character, an investigative journalist, goes in search of the truth around the apparent suicide of a reclusive horror movie director. There are so many twists and turns and bits thrown in that it should be confusing and chaotic, but Pessl’s writing is tight and quick. It’s a masterpiece of creativity. A top read of the year.
