I was so looking forward to reading this - had been on a wait list for months. But was sadly disappointed. Loved the writing style - very expressive and emotive. And the bones for a truly great mystery were all there, attracting the reader. But the actual content? Eh. I don't understand where the "thriller" classification comes in. And it was obvious the reader was being manipulated. Instead of the ending feeling like the loud crack of a popping balloon, it was more like a thrice used balloon letting it's air out - slowly and without amazement.
Oh. Em. Gee. This. Book. I literally had goosebumps throughout the majority of reading this novel. I was in suspense until the very last sentence and then I was left hanging off a cliff. If you want something that keeps your mind spinning with wonder and curiosity, believing in the marginally possible, then read this book. Pessl knocks it out of the park as far as murder mysteries are concerned.
this book was too long with not enough of a impact at the ending..
Not too sure why this was so hyped... It was overtly long, had annoying characters, and a reallllllly drawn out plot. The idea was there, but it got lost in her extreme explanations. Super disappointed by this.
A week later, I'm still thinking about how good this was. So good. Maybe I should give horror another chance as a genre.
Great premise but I just way to long. The suspense was too drawn out and made things uninteresting
Really I give this book 3.5 stars but I'll round up because it kept me guessing until the very end.

Scott is a horrible main character (see any reference he makes about a non-white person) who makes some of the most idiotic decisions I can think of (his decisions surrounding his daughter are some of the strangest). Nora and Hopper are essentially meaningless as side characters. Italics are used every other sentence and any sort of meaning on emphasis is quickly lost. Why is this 600 pages?
