i'm never going to stop thinking about this book, i've started to make a board with red string

I won this on First Reads. I think I may have been selected because I have commented in the past that things that are different appeal to me, and this was different and appealing! It was a weighty tome, 1.75 pounds (yes I weighed it!) but surprisingly light on its feet. I really expected it to be pretty dark, and while it was in parts, the interplay between the characters and the style of the writing and the dialogue kept it moving right along, which I think was essential for a book of this length. I think this has discussion potential for book clubs since each character has a rich and unique back story. Some readers may be disappointed by the end in that the final conversation was not revealed, but I am fine with it, and found the final paragraphs rather poetic. The most unusual aspect of the book was the insertion of internet pages and print articles created to support the novel, this was fun. It might be really fun on an iPad or a top of the line eReader. The last bit that was fun for me in particular was the setting of the estate in the Adirondacks which I live nearby, and the names of roads and towns were very familiar. I did not however think the St. Lawrence County coroner was likely to have processed Genevra's death, as it should have been too far away from the stated location of the estate in relation to Long Lake. I did enjoy this book and recommend it.

One of the worst books I’ve ever read. The first chapter is thrilling. And the rest is just embarrassingly terrible. The author explains her own word choices in parentheticals in the story. So bad.

I am sure this book appeals so film makers, fans of cinema, and anyone who likes the genre. It has some moments of vividly beautiful imagery but too many twists, shadows, and grainy pictures to make it enjoyable. Perhaps it was just not to my tastes.

An engaging read, though it fell a bit short of hitting its own mark. I felt like I kept waiting for some big reveal of how awful Cordova really was, but eventually I abandoned that, realizing that we were already somehow supposed to know or just accept that the characters were familiar with it even if we weren't. It was well-written and interesting, though, despite dragging at points. Also, whoever edited this didn't realize that italics shouldn't be so heavily used - drove me nuts.

Started off so promising and the part where they actually went on to explore his property was great…. But I nearly DNF’d it at the end. What a zzzzzz

This certainly was something entirely different. A little lengthy at times but also a little mind fuck. I really loved the mixed media and stuff.

A mysterious and enthralling roller coaster ride, just remember to suspend any disbelief.

3.5/5

First of all, the writing in here is absolutely breathtaking. It's really beautiful and moving. BUT, this book is freaking long. The story is so long and well-woven, I was expecting an explosive ending, but I never really felt like I got it. Maybe it's because I'm not THAT into mysteries. I'll write more about it on my blog justyouraveragebookreview.blogspot.com!

3.5 stars. i couldn’t tell what the point of the story was until the last third of the book, but the last third was good. shame it took 400 pages to get to the good part.
any time you think a high stakes event is going to happen, it is converted into a medium stakes event that loses any sort of tension it could’ve had.
the clues were also way too obvious to the point i could not suspend my belief anymore.
the concept? good. the execution? not so much.
