This book really disappointed me. I was interested in the multi-media mystery. The book features case files, web pages, emails, and other evidence to make you feel like you are researching along with the characters. The actual mystery was fairly complex and kept me interested.
However, this book has a serious flaw when it comes to the main character who uses shallow stereotypes to describe nearly everyone he encounters. The author’s descriptions of people of color and trans people are concerning. I almost gave up on this book halfway through because I was so annoyed with the narration.

Wow...Just wow...I loved this book and I never knew where the story is taking me. I absolutely loved how the story was told: this pictures, newspaper articles, e-mails, etc. This book had it all: the mystery, the star-crossed lovers, black magic, white magic, travel. You name it...Makes me wish that Cordova was real and I could actually see his movies (on second thought, I probably won't see them because I am a little chicken when it comes to horror movies)
Actual rating 3.5 stars
I really enjoyed most of the book meaning the middle of it. I didn't enjoy the beginning or the end which is weird since I usually enjoy the ending of books.
Night Film is a thriller novel and we follow investigative journalist Scott McGrath and he investigates the suicide of Ashley Cordova. He does not think it is a suicide. Ashley is the daughter of Stanislas Cordova a film director known for his horror films. He hasn't been seen in public for a very long time.
This book was interesting and I really enjoyed it. This book is long and it is almost 600 pages. Since Tome Topple is starting soon it is a perfect time to pick it up. I will say this book is not for everyone. It is a slow read and it is a dense book. I had to read more slowly than usually to understand what was happening which is also why it took a long time for me to read.
Night Film is also my first adult thriller book. Maybe even my first thriller. This book in other words is completely out of my comfort zone. I didn't know whether I would like it or not though I heard good things about it. I feel like I could of enjoyed it more if it wasn't the first adult thriller book I read. I don't think this book is a good place to start if I were to be honest.
I loved the mixed media parts of the story it added a lot to it. Note that not the entire book is told in mixed media format, but some part were, like when McGrath visits a website we will see the website and it also features some photographs which I feel like add more to the story.
Overall I do recommend this book. If you are a scaredy cat like me I think you this book is still okay to read.

I don't even know where to start with this novel. It is long. With twists and turns. But it has many magical aspects and red herrings that you're not even sure which way is upright anymore! And that's only because you're feeling as if you're Scott/you're unravelling the mystery along with him...
While bits of this story annoyed me, I am left with a lot of questions about what was true and what wasn't. A rollercoaster of emotions and postulating about what acually was the true story. I'm still not sure how I wanted the ending to go down. And am I happy with how it concluded? Probably not.
I suspect this book will linger in my mind for a long while.
Update 18 months later - I keep thinking abut this book so have upgraded it to 5 stars. I might have to buy the hard copy ot see what I missed!!

I've owned this book for the past couple of years and have been putting it off for even longer. While the mixed media intrigued me, I was apprehensive about how dark the book would be.
I was drawn in by aspects of this book, including the initial mystery and the character descriptions and motivations. However, the farther I was drawn into the story, the more I got unwillingly sucked into a fever dream. The book describes a worm ouroboros and I felt like that was an apt analogy for this book. Reading this book was somewhat similar to my experience reading [b:I'm Thinking of Ending Things|40605223|I'm Thinking of Ending Things|Iain Reid|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1625603942l/40605223._SY75_.jpg|47328175]. After reading I wondered if I was the only one who didn't get it and why had I devoted my time to this book.
This book seemed like an attempt to be edgy by cataloging anything false, ignoble, wrong, impure, repulsive, detestable, and unworthy that the author could think to include in the book. As a result, the book came off as pretentious and hard to take seriously or appreciate.

Gripping

First Sentence: Everybody has a Cordova story.
This is my first encounter with [a:Marisha Pessl|2362|Marisha Pessl|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1375299170p2/2362.jpg].
I walked out of the book store a couple of years back with this book in my hand thinking it has an awesome cover and the premiss sound so creepy and thought provoking.
I was not disappointed!
Even though it was way darker than I anticipated it kept me turning pages and gasping out loud at most of the plot twists.
This is one of those book that you'll be able to read, and re-read and read again - every time getting some different idea of what the author thought.
