Holy crap this book. I have every intention of writing more about it later but for now, as my mind is still reeling from finishing it, all I have to say is this book was utterly unnerving, fascinating, and pretty downright awesome. Recommend. Recommend so hard.
I'd really like to see some of the fictional films described in this book.
Overall, different. The beginning really drew me in, and all the "possible paranormal" really made me start to think that something else was going on. But I really think the ending is the best part of the whole book, in how it ends. You start to root for the main 3, hoping that somehow, everyone gets what they want. And they do.
Definitely would recommend to others.
My only complaint? The whole "Peak" scene/chapter took forever. Too much for me.

well that was a weird book. i had fun though (and was mildly freaked out! look at me! progress!)
Read this in prepub. Holy sh*t! This is a dark, supernaturally tinged thriller for people who would rather gouge their eye with a pointy stick than read one. Pessl does a lot of heavy lifting until suddenly you believe every word that she is writing. She builds her characters slowly, McGrath, Nora, and Hopper are so lovely, and flawed, and such unlikely cohorts, yet so perfect. She crafts her narrative so tightly, so subtly that one second you are skeptical, looking for the hook, and the next you are falling into the heart-stuttering revelation: oh, no, this might be real (even though it can't be, right?). It's really like riding a roller coaster-click, click, click, click--but you don't actually swoop down. By the end you're exhausted. Some questions answered but perhaps the most important one not really answered. You end up realizing that what seemed like the most important question isn't really all that important, after all, this is an interesting study in what our minds are capable of, how they both protect us and also prevent us from possibility. Read this.

This book just did not grab me. The only reason I continued reading was out of obligation to finish but. F that. There are so many other things to read

This wasn't the best but by far wasn't the worst book I've ever read. I love the twist at the end though!
3.75 stars, rounded up to 4.
I think part of my issue with this story is a lot of little things together that mostly have to do with language around marginalized communities. The book doesn't particularly treat trans people, gay people, or POC particularly well, but those are more minor issues around language. For example, my pet peeve of a book set in NYC but the main cast is all white. Yikes.
The book ultimately could have been shorter but is still fun and spooky, and an interesting ride.

At the end of this one, I'm sort of left scratching my head and saying, "That's it?" While I was absolutely engrossed for many parts of this book, other parts made me say, "Really?" Like him just believing every word everyone tells him. Really? Come on dude. So three stars for keeping me reading but minus two for the execution.
