What a wasted opportunity

Interesting read. I have to say that the author kept me interested enough to keep reading the book. It was a 'dark' book full of twists and turns and fortunately I liked the characters. For a brief moment I was afraid that the characters would be like those in Gone Girl, for whom I hated! I think if it had gone that way, I would have sent the book back to the library.

I'd say 4.5. gripping story, well woven together.

House of cards like scenarios and was that an answer to a question or did it just pose another new question...

Pretty good, solid use of an unlikable narrator.

I tore through this book in three days, which is not particularly long when one considers the length and the fact that I have three children (and two dogs) to care for. ;) I was HOOKED for the first 200/300 pages, and then it went downhill from there. McGrath hops from one lead to another and makes rookie mistake after rookie mistake. I wasn't expecting the element of black magic, which was a turn-off to me. I wasn't sure about all the articles and web pages, but it was an interesting way to add a lot of information and backstory without bogging the reader down by including it in the narrative. I felt like Plessl had potential with this story, but she lets it dangle for too long. Also, the italics bothered me.

Finished purely out of spite.

I have mixed feelings about Night Film. The plot was good enough to keep me reading even though the writing style sometimes got on my nerves. There were a few minor inconsistencies, and at times the author over-explained things that should be obvious to any reader. The book seemed to be an attempt to copy the unconventional format of books such as House of Leaves, S., and The Raw Shark Texts, but in my opinion it wasn't as good as those others.

In spite of all that though, the storyline kept me riveted from start to finish. I would've given it 5 stars if not for those minor flaws.

At times Night Film is exciting, breath-taking, a real page-turner. But I found the last 100 pages a bit tedious, and I think it probably just went on a bit too long. I struggled to suspend my disbelief, and that is a key part of stories that are delving into magical worlds. It's enjoyable enough, but I'll most likely forget about it down the road.

Dark and twisty and disturbing, with a splash of witchcraft/occult and a lot of creepy, but I really enjoyed this book. It kept me guessing, and although I didn't love all of the characters, I did enjoy their interactions and was fascinated to see where the book would go. The ending was a bit like the final Lord of the Rings film; every time you thought it was over, it wasn't. But the actual ending was satisfying, and I'm curious to see how this translates to film.
