Me sentí bastante idiota no haber sacado el plot twist del final, porque después de pensarlo varias veces, siempre estuvo ahí, así que me sorprendió bastante. Me intriga saber que me deparará el resto de la saga.

Holy mother of plot twists! I haven't been into YA books in a long time (probably because I'm just a "regular" adult now, sheesh) but this one knocked me off my socks. The world building is incredibly detailed and you can tell that the overarching plot was meticulously planned, which, knowing this author, is not surprising, especially since Dark Rise has been in the making for 10 years! Throughout the story, the characters fight their predetermined fates in a very classic good vs evil kind of way, but there are unexpected twists and turns along the way. The point-of-view changes are effective in bringing the reader closer to the different characters while also portraying key scenes happening at the same time in different places. If you liked Leigh Bardugo's "Six of Crows" and any book with a "Chosen One" theme, then you'd probably like this, too. I loved C. S. Pacat's Captive Prince series, and this trilogy seems just as promising (though very different) and I'm excited for the next book to come out.

Got some conflicted thoughts on this book, but overall I'd say I enjoyed it!
For the first half, maybe to 75% to be honest, I wasn't really hooked. The setting and the plot by all means SHOULD have hooked me, but I just wasn't on the edge of my seat like I really wanted to be. I know it's the first book in a series but it felt like between the beginning and the end nothing really important happened? You really could've cut out the middle and the end-game would've made sense even without the entire middle of the story.
I will say I did start getting into it in the last 3rd of the story though. The twists got me and there were definitely a few moments where I was like "oh we are NOT fucking around okay!!" Will and James' interactions were actually what got me properly interested in it instead of just passing the time, I suppose. I thought they were where the LGBTQ+ tag were going to come in but aside from some implications I don't actually think that tag should be on this book. I don't think you should tag for future queer relationships if they aren't actually happening in the book, if that's what's happening here.
The ending though? WOOF. I didn't see it coming though it seemed obvious in retrospect and that final line was a GUT PUNCH. That line, if nothing else, would've made me want to continue the series, but there are definitely a few other things that made me want to press on, so I'll probably go ahead and read the sequel next.
