Dark Rise, Volume 1

Don't trust booktok with this one (YES I KNOW I'm still going through my booktok backlog....), it's pretty good but it's not "nutted my guts out" good like they made it out to be.

I'm not sure what I feel about Dark Rise, I'm not really fond of the unreliable narrator trait and to be honest all in all a bit miffed with the 180° it did at the end.

But the good things; the story reminded me of Darker shade of magic which I love, and you bet your ass I love strong female characters and BOY does Dark Rise deliver with Violet.

There are a few things that I have a gripe with in the book but ulimately I like it, didn't love it but it's damn close to being there.

So yea pretty mid, a bit above mid even, gonna keep reading this series

I expected this to be a fairly formulaic good vs. evil story (since it's literally about Light vs. Dark) but it quickly showed itself to be smarter and more nuanced than that.

Can you escape fate. Destiny. Blood.
Remembrance as power and the only thing holding back dark. Memory as light.

My favorite character is James haha what a surprise not at all predictable.

EDIT: I think I liked it more the second time. (14/11/2023)

I liked this! ... I'm just surprised I didn't like it more???

The world-building was insanely good, the characters interesting and the writing captivating (I read the whole thing in just over a day!!)... but the middle felt really slow. THAT ENDING THOUGH!!! I need to know what happens next!

I will absolutely be recommending this series, as well as lining up to get Book 2 - I just wish that I have loved it a bit more (I was fully expecting it to be 2022 fave)... perhaps on re-read?

3.5/5

how could you end it like that !!! i felt like i got cut off in the middle of a sentence !!!

saw a tweet that compared will to the textpost “trying not to be the main character in my own life story” and i fear that might be accurate. he does not want to embrace the plot and instead attempts to watch it from the sidelines while also deducing everyone’s moves. he’s an interesting character and even more interesting to watch as a main character.

also the tension and pull between will and james is fascinating (!!) it’ll be interesting to watch develop in the second book

Wow I ended up loving this book so much.

It did take me a little to get into and understanding the world but from the 100 page mark I was absolutely locked in.

I loved all of our main characters and the complicated relationships between them. The antagonists were also done really well and had so many layers to them.

The last 50 pages I was on the edge of my seat and there were reveals that I really didn’t see coming.

I’m so excited to see where the story goes after that ending and best believe I’ve already ordered book 2.

4.5/5 stars!
