One of my favorite fantasy book ever!!! Usually I'm not really into fantasy but this book is so fascinating, a true page-turner!!!

The world building is lovely, character development is understandable and inspiring, even though I think they are quite fit into character tropes and flat, but this is just the first book of the series, I can't wait to see more.

Chemistry and tension between character are intense, I was on edge the whole time waiting for a passionate kiss but there were none, but I wasn't disappointed. I guess the bonds, the trust and belief the characters have in each other could replace the romance!! Crazy, complicated dynamics between character are so amazing and well-written!!!

(Confession) I kinda fell in love with James Sinclair, even though he was unlikable in this book. I felt a little bit guilt for liking the bad guys... I'm gonna read the second book now, James, please give me more reasons to like you (not your pretty face, asshole)

I hope Violet found a home where she belongs. I hope to know more about her Indian heritage and her relationship with Cyprian, who also deserve more character development (he was a racist bitch).

I trust Will to be a true hero, a savior, a king who would not let his power corrupt him. At the end of the day, the Dark King have to fight the dark in him first! My lovely and precious Will, stay safe, stay warm and enjoy being in love! (He was so stressed during this book, I thought he would break down after Katherine's but he wasn't, a true soldiers!!!)

So we have the King, the Lion, the last Steward, and ... The King's soulmate!!!! What a found family!

Interesting. It feels like a lot of effort has been put into creating this world, I could feel that, but i’m not sure that it resulted in it feeling as expansive as it should’ve. Honestly, it often felt a little paper thin with most of the word building occurring through major info dumps - telling not showing.

The plot was layered effectively, if a little conveniently, with enough hints provided that it is fairly easy to see where the twists and turns are going to come from.

The premise of what they were trying to prevent was compelling enough, even if i found the main villain Simon a little ridiculous.
(However (and keeping it vague to avoid spoilers) I have to say i’m still a little confused on the technicalities of the whole James thing. Like what happened the moment he/others realised?? and … how does that work?? it just raises so many questions?? like if his happened so early why did the other [one particular] characters realisation happen until much later??)

Character-wise I really could not tell you a thing about most of the character’s personality. They felt very very bland and generic. I have no clue as to a single interest or internal belief held by any of them.

Also, what was the point of the Katherine POV??? like?? why???

For the inter-character relationships nothing ever seemed to happened organically, all relationships were stated and told to the reader with nothing very emotional or compelling ever shown. At one point Violet says something like ‘Justice was like her older brother’. How????? How was I meant to feel that????

A lot of this story felt like it relied on tropes to convey characterisations to the reader rather than using them as an opportunity to explore the characters.

The moments that included James were actually fairly interesting, I felt like you could feel that this was the character the Pacat really wanted to write and thrived in. So much of the rest of the book felt almost like resentful prologue, just waiting to get started in book 2.

So overall I had moments where i enjoyed the story, but albeit in a very detached and unemotional way.
