The Betting Woman is about the evolution of Simone Jules in Madame Moustache and bringing her game of Blackjack all around the U.S. during the gold rush.
I really liked the gold rush elements and challenges of a woman making her way in a man’s world in the late 1800’s, and her story was intriguing to be sure! I really liked the process of her building her emporium in Nevada, and I wish that could have lasted even longer. It was so interesting!
I thought the last third of the book where she became Madame Moustache was a little flat. I felt like it drug on really long, she seemed to just be constantly moving around listlessly, and the nickname wasn’t something she owned like her prior identities, but rather was given to her mockingly. It seemed to take a book of a strong women into meh territory.
Overall – solid read, especially if you are looking for something to mix up your current TBR!

DNF'd on page 133. This book started out strong with a compelling story but it started to slog down. It simultaneously felt rushed and incredibly slow at the same time. The premise was very cute with a woman losing it all and heading west to start new jumping from one dead-end romance to a new forbidden love that ends is unexplained tragedy. From this point, I just felt myself asking "what is this woman doing!?" but not in a "I can't wait to find out" and instead more of a "why?????" way.
