Such a great story. Reading it again as an adult I'm struck by how bleak it is. KA Applegate really didn't pull any punches when depicting the cynicism, hypocrisy and exhaustion surrounding conflict.

the first half of this book is a huge bummer but the end is so worth it. animorphs continues to blow my mind with complicated grey morality and interconnected alien lore.........
also major spoilers but
'I smiled, despite everything. Alloran had failed us. My people were doomed now, either way. But in the end, Aldrea was my true friend. She had lied to me, used me from time to time, and yet now, here, in this black moment, she was my true friend.
"I didn't believe you," I admitted. "When you said if you were forced to choose, you'd choose me."
<Of course you didn't believe it,> Aldrea said. <I was lying. Once again. But this isn't a choice at all.>'

Even if you don't know anything about the Animorphs, read this anyway.

While you'd probably need to read some of the animorphs series to understand this book well, it would be worth it. It's definitely a sad story but with a little hope at the end.
