Being a Van Halen fan and having read the many biographies and autobiographies about the band, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Alex’s memoir (I purchased the e-book version). After finally finding some time to sneak this into my reading schedule, I can say I enjoyed this autobiography. Did I love it?

Alex Van Halen's contribution to the band is often overlooked. The way he chooses to write both encompasses the generosity towards his fellow band mates and the appreciation of the whole group, something lacking in retellings of other members. (*cough* Lee Roth *cough*)
Although a memoir of the band's first four albums, the relationship of the two siblings is first and foremost the beating heart of the appropriately named "Brothers", and Alex reflecting on not only the loss of his younger sibling, but the loss of many other friends and family whilst moving into to his early seventies.
*Bonus points for reminding everyone of that hilarious Italian TV rendition of "So This Is Love". Dave Lee Roth is really dry humping a Stegosaurus tail while wearing a scarf in the design of piano keys. And if that's not enough of a reason to look it up, you're missing out. HA!

The book was a nice synopsis about the early years of Van Halen and the relationship between Alex and Eddie.  I was a little surprised that it didn't really touch on the Hagar years, but that alone seems to tell you that Alex thought the Roth years were the real Van Halen.  It was nice to read about their upbringing and get Alex's perspective of Ed's personality and what drove the band in the early years.  I thought he did a nice job

It was an interesting listen, but I would have liked a bit more insight from Alex van Halen personally about his brother, their relationship and the band they formed, and not from articles and texts that were already published. Sometimes it felt a bit jumbly as well. The book would have profited from a common thread.
