It’s so hard to rate a book that was beautifully written, but really could have ended after 200 pages?? The last 300 pages made me feel like a prisoner, and I will admit I very lightly skimmed the last 100 pages. Life is too short - normalize not finishing a book that no longer brings you joy.

I read this for the Olympic Games readathon Aphrodite prompt to read a classic, as well as at a friend's suggestion. I was under the impression that I would like this just about as much as I liked Wuthering Heights, which is to say, not very much. However, I ended up loving this!
Jane Eyre is an orphan living with her cruel aunt and cousins who wants nothing more than to escape them. She eventually gets her wish, being admitted to a school for orphans and becoming a governess before being hired at the house of a one Mr. Rochester.
One cool thing that I learned about this while researching this is that Jane Eyre was one of the first books to use first-person, and popularized it. I felt that this was one of the strong suits of the novel, that we could see into her head - it really sets this apart from other novels of the time and makes it feel more modern nowadays. The thing that I loved most about this book was Jane herself. I find her character very feminist for the time and endearing in any time. Whlie I cared about the love story, I cared more about Jane being happy than her being with Mr. Rochester (even if that is what makes her happy).
Here's my star breakdown:
+ Jane Eyre is a lovely, strong protagonist
+ Gothic vibes on point
+ Sweet romance (though the age gap is... whoof.)
+ Feminist themes
+ Writing style - first-person and easy to read regardless of age

Spoiler
I've heard criticism that Jane is magically gifted money just so that she could be with Mr. Rochester in the end, but I felt that it was set up pretty well so that it didn't feel cheap and that there was enough function in the plot that it really didn't feel that way. Jane needed money to survive and Mr. Rochester would have married her anyway. Here's my star breakdown:

reader, this was may more erotic than i thought possible for this time period.
Morally kick-ass independent heroin. Perfect timing reading this 2 weeks after I myself got married. It’s giving me over the garden wall vibes. FANTASTIC.
