A fabulous can't put down book. While not reading it (work? Why must you interfere in my real life) I was trying to work out the back story, where had this story come from, and where could it possibly end up?
Read it. It's not like anything else you've read.

The book was quite unique. An interesting story but I had trouble to get used to the South African setting and the idiomatic words. But overall a solid and short living book, though it needs a long time to get interessting in my opinion.
I listened to this book and while I wouldn't describe the narration as atrocious, I would say that it did detract from my enjoyment of the book. That out of the way, let's just say that this is one of those "cool concept, shitty execution" books. I like what she did with the animal familiars and the nod to [a:Philip Pullman|3618|Philip Pullman|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1396622492p2/3618.jpg], but basically Ms. Beukes is one of those people that couldn't find a plot with both hands. The atmosphere, setting, and characters are interesting, but I would describe this book as nigh unreadable based on the plot. What a mess! 2.5 rounded up, because of the lovely (and by lovely, I mean dingy, degraded, dark, smelly, damp...hmm, fully-drawn?) atmosphere, but don't read it expecting any kind of satisfaction.

Vivid and imaginative. I really like the main character. Doesn't quite deliver on the plot.
Fun novel involving magic, the music industry, and the slums in South Africa. Minor plot sputtering 2/3 through, but enjoyable read.
I liked the concepts Beukes explores, and Zinzi's POV is unique and compelling. Unfortunately, the plot is unnecessarily convoluted. It ends up competing with the characterizations and world building. A pared down plot would have given the world more space to flourish in the reader's mind. As it is, the parts of Zoo City that actually work are frequently overshadowed by the parts that don't. 4 star ideas; 1 star plot.
