I loved reading Cultish and was eager to come back and read Montell's other book, especially given the subject matter. She did not disappoint, and I ended up being asked to confront some of my own internalized sexism around language and the way women talk.

Chapter 6: How to Confuse a Catcaller, is one of the most powerful, validating chapters I’ve ever read. It discusses how men’s mistreatment of women stems from a lack of empathy, and the ways women feel voiceless in many situations.

Incredibly interesting book. Lots of insight into how we talk and why and what we can do to make language less oppressive and more inclusive.

I wanted to like this. I did like the beginning, but I wanted it to focus more on linguistics. The beginning cites studies, talks about the etymology of words, but it could have been at least 75 pages shorter. I don't really care about what she likes to use for curse words or to call her vagina. It is important what terms we use as a society, but the personal anecdotes were annoying. This book has a lot of potential, but I just felt it could be edited better.
