I devoured this. The pov shift to the diary is genius. Nothing goes as planned. I'm still an atheist and I loved this book.

I did not finish this book. I didn't like how it was written.
For years I have avoided this book due to my aversion to the cinematic adaptation. Do yourself a favor: avoid the film, and read the book.
Well it was good in the beginning into the midway point. Then it took a turn.
Bottom line I like the movie better.

Pushed to finish it. Still didn't care about a single character.
Hard to say.
For the first half, it could do no wrong. So many sentences that I wanted to remember, that seemed so perfectly crafted and accurate.
The middle chunk was a slog. It starts to get so repetitive, and the whole piece from the woman's perspective starts to make it really clear that this is not a book about a consuming, fiery, jealous love, but about God. About a sort of specifically Catholic God.
Honestly, the last half is still super repetitive, and sloggy. But I couldn't hate this book at any rate. There were plenty of captivating bits.
Or maybe I couldn't hate it because Colin Firth narrates the audio version. I think the only way to parse out a review for the book, to make sure it's not biased, would be to have Colin Firth read every book to me.
