I almost quit reading this book after 100 pages I got really bored. I owe my finishing of this book to [b:The Mighty Angel|1065583|Pod Mocnym AnioĊem|Jerzy Pilch|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1190623670s/1065583.jpg|1052227] I don't honestly know if this book should be getting 3 or 4 stars, I feel a bit bad giving it 4. I think the book doesn't feel like it comes from a person and I think in context that ruins the book. It is possible to write as a disinterested observer if you are writing about events, but if you are writing about a mans reflections on life you have to write as if you are that person. Perhaps he did and his personality just sucks for me, he did spend a ridiculous amount of time in denial. I can see liking this book I suppose, but it wasn't me.
It's not his best work but it's not far off when you consider he wrote in secret code while locked up in a Nazi asylum. He got the highly-rationed wartime paper by promising Goebbels he'd write an anti-Jewish novel, but nope, he wrote a book critical of the prison system and his own addictions.
