Divertente, romantico, impegnato, commovente. McQuiston esplora tutte le emozioni possibili in questo romanzo che è un piacere leggere, soprattutto se ci si approccia ad esso con un goccio di "sospensione della realtà".
Ammetto di aver visto il film prima di leggere il libro, e questo forse me l'ha fatto apprezzare ancor di più: è così che RB&SB può svelare una sua certa complessità, oltre a far risaltare ancor di più la maniera onesta e profonda di trattare le tematiche LGBTQ+, dove la delicatezza dello stile di Heartstopper incontra una maggiore (e assolutamente sensata, oltre che divertente) disinibizione.
Forse, quindi, poco importa che la società attorno a Henry e Alex (personaggi di per sé privilegiati) sia idealizzata per molti aspetti, relegando le visioni più retrograde ai pochi individui davvero negativi: McQuiston ci culla con un'illusione ben congegnata e che non desidera mostrarsi come qualcosa di diverso, preferendo concentrarsi sul tortuoso sviluppo dei sentimenti dei suoi protagonisti. L'obiettivo è pienamente raggiunto, e ci regala una storia godibilissima e ricca di momenti esilaranti.

A truly enjoyable, addictive, sexy read. At times the lavish wealth and fame of the characters feels like fanfiction, and lots of pages will be taken up by escapist fantasies of blowout White House parties and lakeside villas and heady trysts in Wimbledon closets. But that’s why we picked up this book, isn’t it? And don’t be mistaken: just because “Red White and Royal Blue” is campy and escapist doesn’t mean it closes its eyes to the entrenched homophobia (and other crimes against humanity) that both America and Britain are rife with. As a casual anarchist, it did feel to me like trying to put out the fire from inside the house, (“But see, these guys are GOOD royals! These are the NICE democrats!”), but hell, fiction is fiction, and this was damn good fiction. I’d recommend this to anyone who wants to get blown by Prince Charming. God knows I do.
