The characters were cute, the setting was interesting (mythology cowboys?!) but the first half of this book was laced with fatphobia. It eased up in the second half or I would not have finished, but I wouldn't recommend this one without a strong content note. Jokes about 'not being able to keep her figure' are just not funny.

Pretty interesting world-building, but I wish there was more exploring the world rather than focusing on the relationship. There was some "mild" fat shaming and weird ableism, but it was enough for me to feel soured on the book somewhat. I also didn't realize this was a romance, and it's not my typical fare, but I don't blame the book for that.

This ended up being a perfect storm of wrong expectations and poorly choosing format for a first read (audio) that led to me having a less than ideal reading experience. The comparisons to Howl's Moving Castle (a peerless book in some ways) set me up for disappointment when the emotion and the narrators were fine to listen to but fumbled a few words. Since the book seemed to drag plot-wise as I was listening it was harder to be...merciful, I guess.

This is a pretty straightforward romantic comedy in a fun-feeling secondary fantasy world (that's the part that resembles to HMC) where the plot felt tertiary.
