I loved this book. I get that it was a novel and not a history book, but it was so interesting to learn about the native Hawaiian culture in this format. The flow and timeline of the story was a great way to see the progression of not only the three generations of women, but the fight that the Native Hawaiians had against the colonisation of their home.
My family is Melanesian, not Polynesian, but there were so many cultural crossovers that it felt like this was a story about my family too. The love and reverence that you felt as the author described hula and its importance felt the same way that I feel when talking with family about our dancing. Its connection to culture, the earth, our bodies and our ancestors.
Genre: Romance
Format: Audio (Libby)
POV: Multiple

Captivating family story intertwined with the dark history of colonialism in Hawaii and its contemporary impacts. Highly recommend.

Hawaii is my favorite place in the world so when I came across Hula I immediately bought it without question. It is a beautifully written ode to Hawaii. I loved the voice of the community as one of the narrators throughout the story. While this is fiction, I learned more about Hawaii's history. To see it through the Naupaka women's eyes was powerful. This one is likely going to stick with me for awhile.
