This took me over two years to read, so it felt like an era as much as a book. It was written by a noble woman in the 11th century Japan, and it gives us a glimpse into such an alien world it may as well be a fantasy. It was at times extremely dull and difficult to follow but particular episodes will stay with me for the rest of my life.

While I was reading this book, I constantly forgot how early it was written. The culture described is so highly developed and the style in which the book (can I say novel?) is written, is too. Murasaki is a keen observer of the human mind. 'The Tale of the Genji' has a gentleness that I love. Tip: read it after Beowulf (written in the same time).
