Damn 3/3 for Elizabeth Acavedo how tf is she so good
This might be my least favorite by a tiny bit of hers but I still absolutely loved it and it was so beautiful and well told and so sad but I still loved it

So I didn’t love the poetry format but that’s on me for not noticing that in the tags, so I didn’t knock it against it. Despite not loving the style, I adored the sisters and their bond with each other. I do think the plot got wrapped up rather quickly, however, and wished the story were a bit longer.

Very emotional read and took me a long time to get through, but well worth it. Loved the plotline, prose, representation. Also loved all the strong woman characters. Deserves a reread one day.

Written in verse, this story explores grief, parental betrayal, infidelilty, and sisterhood. It stars two high school-aged girls who find out that they are sisters when their father dies in a plane crash. It centers people from the Dominican Republic.

I wasn't a huge fan of Acevedo's first novel in verse, which was about poetry itself, but freed from the conceit of poetry about poetry, her writing soars in CLAP WHEN YOU LAND. The descriptions of Puerto Plata are immersive, the characters are richly drawn and even characters like Papi, whose deception touches off the plot, and Wilson, who asks for money, are treated with compassion and love, and the difference of opportunity between two sisters living in different countries, with different citizenship papers, is stark. Some themes, like (trigger warning)
Yahaira's reaction to her assault and her sexuality
, are not explored as deeply as I would like, and it seems that Camino gets the bulk of the character development and change. But overall, this is a hugely moving, rich, and satisfying story.
