I won this book in a giveaway which was awesome!

I really enjoyed the first book in the duology (and re-read it prior to starting this one). I had a really hard time with about the first 100 pages (the first section of the book). I even put it down for a couple of weeks. Ironically, if I had just read one chapter more, I would have been hooked again. I am not quite sure why I struggled with the first section, but the last 300 pages were excellent!

The main premise of the book is fighting to get a new ruler, so there are some really dark scenes in this book as the ruler on the throne, Shayla, lacks any kind of moral or ethical compass. I don’t typically love war stories, but there were other plot lines other than just battles. For that reason, I think I preferred the first book Hunted by the Sky, but I still liked Rising Like a Storm.

Specifically, I liked how Cavas and Gul’s relationship strengthened and deepened and I appreciated that while the star warriors relied on Gul/Cavas, there were a lot of other players and the action didn’t solely rely on the two of them. There were other characters who made alliances, solved problems, and pushed back against Gul/Cavas when they had bad ideas. I continued to love the backdrop, magic system and world that the author created. Also, the cover is gorgeous.

Overall, while I didn’t love this book as much as the first one, I thought it provided a satisfying conclusion to the story.

Side note- I think a duology was the perfect length for the story and I wish more authors did duologies!
