5 Stars! Utterly brilliant writing and storytelling. I just love Ender so much in this book.
2nd read: 7/4/22-7/10/22
4.5 Stars! So fantastic! Really ties Ender’s Game and Speaker for the Dead together. Also resolved some Shadow series plots. The 2nd half was definitely a lot more entertaining than the first half but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Worth reading if you liked Ender's Game. Although more and more I think OSC is moving from gripping plot-based novels to freewheeling thinkfests. Which are ok, since his characters are compelling, but I think his earlier books are my faves.

It was a little strange to go back in time after the first four books spanned Ender’s lifetime, but it was fun, too...

Listening to this latest about Ender's trip to the new colony made me miss Ender all over again. As usual, I got sucked in immediately. It was gratifying to learn more about what happens to Valentine, Peter, Bean, Petra, and Graff, and Ender is really intriguing as always. The audio productions are so great and add a lot to the story. Now I feel the need to read through the end of the Shadow branch of the Ender saga.

I wasn't particularly impressed with this one. There was very little in the way of new information, and the writing was not Card's best work.
The book felt rather scattered, there were several scenes that had no reason to exist, and there were two separate sorts of climaxes to the book. The first one was rather undramatic after a long build-up (the arrival at the colony, and the subversion of Morgan's attempted takeover), while the second one was much more interesting, but far too hurried (the scenes at Virlomi's colony).
I was also not particularly please with the characterization of most of the female characters. There are women out there who aren't evil, temptresses, or pure, boring, virginal types. It would be nice if Card recognized this fact.

I so enjoy Ender's story in all it's forms. The first book that got me into Science Fiction.
Whilst this is in the mainline Ender series, and contains a significant development for that storyline, on the whole this book is oddly placed. It feels like an epilogue to the first four books/ quadrilogy of the Shadow series, yet also spends a lot of time with characters who are only relevent for parts of this novella (Allesandra and her mother, starfleet captains and colony xenobiologists). This somewhat drags the reading excitement, although there is a clear throughline about Ender's emotional distance (from his family, friends, humanity) and suffering as he carries the weight of his actions from Ender's Game, and some solid world-building. A decent and almost fast read, I'm just not sure how to feel about Ender in Exile overall.
