This is the poster child for the phrase don’t judge a book by its cover. This book is weighty and fairly depressing. I do hope January and Gus find peace and healing for all they’ve been through.

It's a cute book but has a lot of weird things that impacted my enjoyment. 

First off, it does not take place on a beach so I was kind of annoyed as I specifically waited to read it at the beach. A cold lake is not the beach and they are also rarely there. Also note character names of January and August(us).

Anyway, the more important of my complaints is that every time the couple kisses/gets physical, it is at the weirdest time. Like January is crying about her family and that's when Gus makes a move? 100 feet from a brutal cult murder site y'all are gonna hook up? This behavior didn't make me root for their romance, I'll tell you that. The whole book is riddled with these tonal shifts that felt messy.

Also January's circus book sounded bad.

There were cute moments and I liked the idea, but ultimately it just fell flat for me. I had just finished Book Lovers which I think has a very similar premise, so maybe that's why I was disappointed here.
