I’m not a romance girlie, but this book was cute. I liked the story and that it wasn’t just about falling in love like so many other romance books can be like, both characters were very layered and broken, but didn’t blame each other for their issues which I liked. Emily Henry definitely knows how to break the mold in romance novels.

I did have some issues with the writing…I feel like I hit 50% of the book and felt like it could have ended there (minus the closure of her relationship with her father) Their relationship moved way too fast. I really wanted to hear more about the rivalry/enemy relationship they seemed to have in the first few chapters, but none of that was there. There was very little build up to their romantic relationship. I didn’t feel any tease that I wanted.

Secondly, the ending??? wtf? He literally told her he didn’t want to get married again and then all of a sudden asks her to marry her??? no….thats such lazy writing.

I think if you’re not a fan of romance this book has more of a story that I think most will like, and obviously if you’re into romance then have at it!

Didn't shatter my world or anything but it was entertaining.

I can’t explain it, but there have been so many moments in Emily Henry’s books where I’ve thought “yes! I’ve felt that way and never knew how to express it.”

One of my favorite quotes from this book
“How could I trust my own feelings? People were complicated. They weren’t math problems. They were collections of feelings, and decisions, and dumb luck. The world was complicated too - not a beautifully hazy French film, but a disastrous, horrible mess bespeckled with brilliance and love and meaning.”

this book is just very mid. i didn’t really care too much about the actual romance because they barely had any chemistry. essentially, they were more interesting as individuals than as a couple. i hoped they’d have a bit more of that rivals to lovers vibe but it cut the ‘rivals’ part pretty short. i liked some of their banter but it often turned too cringy for my taste. i also liked that it explored some darker themes which i didn’t expect from this book. overall it was cute but for a romance book the romance was simply a bit too lackluster.

It may be that I relate to Gus, it may be that I relate to January, but I absolutely loved this book.

I have cried in two books in my life (now three after this one), but this book hit close to home. It was a beautiful love story that went through ups and downs; they showed what it was like to learn to love and trust another person as well as yourself.

I have a complicated relationship with my dad and the way January describes her view of her dad and how it changes throughout the novel is everything that I have felt at one time or another. This was such a healing book to have at this point in my life. Thank you, Emily Henry.

p.s. I read the UK ending first and then the US ending. Personally, I like the UK ending, although both of them have callbacks to their relationship seen throughout the book.
