Beautifully romantic read, if you crave love mixed with topics that make you look at life a little differently, set in a cute lake town, this is the book for you

Perfect (and sometimes hot) summer read... especially for the beach ;-)

I'm convinced that Emily Henry can do no wrong. While I didn't love this quite as much as Book Lovers and didn't find January and Gus as great of characters as Nora and Charlie, I still loved this book. I love how Emily Henry makes her MC & LI go through a lot of shit & have a lot of trauma in their past, but then they process & address it together and help each other heal, it's the most beautiful shit ever 😭 I also enjoy the author's meta writing style where she writes about books and writing and being an author, and the things her characters write in their books are also happening in the actual book that we're reading! In this book, I wanted just a bit more of January and Gus and perhaps a bit less of the other elements going on, but I did really appreciate January's whole process of grieving her dad but also being mad at him for what he did, such a complex but beautiful and beautifully human process! So again, not quite Book Lovers but still probably among my favorite books of the year. I am simply obsessed with Emily Henry's writing style and plotting and the way in which she makes two broken characters come together and make each other slightly less broken.

The characters are fleshed out, the romance is good (they actually have chemistry), I didn’t leave the book with unanswered questions (of what I can think of at least.
I read the uk version, but I would be very interested in reading the us one, as this is a book I could very much imagine myself rereading.
I’ve read this in the summer, and even though the book is taking place in the summer I think it would be a good read any time of the year.

Very cute. Grittier than I expected, in a good way. Flew through it - fast paced read. Especially loved Pete and Maggie. I was particularly impressed by Emily Henry's ability to describe the physical, emotional feelings of the ups and downs of falling in love, i.e. "a new ache pinballing through my body" or "my throat felt like it had collapsed".

After he passed away, January Andrews moved into her dad’s beach house. The very one he shared with his mistress. While balancing her emotions after discovering her dad wasn’t who she grew up thinking he was she simultaneously has a fast approaching deadline for her next book. January struggles to relate to her usual genre of romance since her life is anything but romantic. To make matters worse, her new next door neighbor is her old college writing nemesis, Augustus Everett. Augustus writes completely opposite of January. Where her books are romantic and have a happy ending, his books explore heavy topics and never have a happy ending. The two are polar opposites, but you know what they say: opposites attract.

4.5/5 ⭐️

Super enjoyable summer romance! This book was definitely character driven but I absolutely loved every page and never found myself bored. I also loved that we got to see January’s book develop so it was almost like a 2 for 1 story. As an aspiring writer it was also super cool to see January’s writing process and to see how she unfolded her story. I definitely recommend this as a perfect summer romance read!

ahrensnug's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 75%

Too much death cult, not enough fun beach times. The main characters are both so serious. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood to read it, but when I see a poppy, bright cover on a "lighthearted beach read" book, I assume it's going to be lighthearted and fun time. This was my second Emily Henry book after reading People we Meet on Vacation - which I thought was okay. But I'm not sure about giving their books a third try. I guess I'll go look for a light, fluffy book to fill this hole.
