Really really enjoyed this book! This is my first time reading Emily Henry & I understand the hype now.

Beach Read felt like a Sarah Dessen book but all grown up.

I like that it wasn't just a fluffy romance. She dived into heavier topics like death, grief, childhood trauma and abandonment issues. The cult storyline/subplot(?) was really interesting and I liked how it tied into
Gus's
story.

I'm happy we got actual details about the book January was writing instead of a vague sentence or two. It felt like I got to read 3 books (
Beach Read, Janie's book, and the cult interviews (Gus's book)
) in one and I absolutely loved it. I guess the changes in tone and setting was great for my ADHD brain. But it also didn't feel like too much was happening at once.

I enjoyed the slow-ish burn between January and
Gus
. Although this is a romance book, I genuinely wasn't sure if they'd end up together in the end.
At some point, I would have been happy to see her (literally) sailing off into the sunset all by herself.

I would have liked to see more sexually intimate scenes or at least make the existing ones a bit more explicit, but that's just me (a girly who grew up reading smutty fanfics 👀🤭).

I have daddy issues so some of this book wrecked me. Looking at you, chapter
25
!! I was bawling my eyes out, tears and snot rushing down my face and onto my ereader. But imma be real, that just made me love the book even more lol.

Though I read this book in summer, I didn't have the privilege of reading it on the beach, but I think it would be a perfect beach read. ☀️🏖📖💛 Can't wait for the movie!

Entertaining like a shitty low-budget romance movie you end up watching on the couch with your mom on a summer day. However, I need women to stop referring to men as predators and to themselves as prey when its completely unwarranted.

This had all the classic elements I have come to expect from an Emily Henry novel, but of the three I have read (Happy Place and Funny Story are the other two) it is my least favourite. It was fun and enjoyable, but I was far more interested in the sub-plot of the character's writing competition than their romance and Gus is my least favourite of the love interests so far. I also was really looking forward to the conversation with January and her agent when it came time for her to present a novel that was absolutely not the genre/story she promised, and hearing how the publisher would react or who else they might try to sell the book to. But this happened off-page during a 9 month time skip which was disappointing. Solid read but not my favourite.

I've been in a reading slump for the last few months and I am very glad this the book that broke me out out of it.

I found Beach Read harder to get into than Emily Henry's other books, but I still really enjoyed myself. The characters took me longer to warm to, too. The main characters were both messy in their own ways, with tonnes of baggage, though that itself wasn't the issue.
I think it was that I was expected January to be more... well, more of a hopeless romantic. You know, the way she is described in the blurb. But she really, really wasn't. She was more cynical and pessimistic than any other character, including so-called cynic, Gus. It's not surprising considering what she has been through, but still... It was also frustrating watching her self-sabotage time and time again. Like, c'mon, have a conversation BEFORE jumping to conclusions? No miscommunication tropes here, just straight up lack-of-communication and jumping-to-conclusions tropes, if those exist.

There was also quite a lack of beach time for a book named Beach Read.
