You ever read a book that makes you feel seen? It makes so much sense to you, connects with you on such a deep level? That was Beach Read by Emily Henry for me.
This book was NOTHING how I thought it was going to be. The story within the pages was so vastly opposite of the cover and the blurb on the back that it’s funny.
Yes, this book was romantic and hilarious, but in no means would I consider this a light romcom/beach read and I think that’s the whole POINT. It’s about trauma and healing, learning to love the person you grow into. Finding understanding and acceptance in the least expected places (and people). It’s about loss - the person you used to be, the comforts of time past, loved ones… and it hurts, but feels so so meaningful.
I connected with our FMC, January, almost immediately. I know what it’s like to be known for your sunshine personality and loving demeanor, but have life kicked your ass so thoroughly that you feel lost and empty and no one can see that you’re drowning. (I promise this is not a cry for help, it’s just so relatable and significant to me… January, I see you) We are kindred spirits, who feel emotions so strongly we don’t know what to do with them, and resort to humor as a fail safe.
Gus was the steadfast strength January needed to finally realize that it’s ok she’s a different person than she used to be. There’s a point in the book that January’s dad says about her mom, “Your mother has been a lot of people in the twenty years I’ve known her, and I’ve had the chance to fall in love with every single one of them. That’s the key to marriage. You have to keep falling in love with every new version of each other, and it’s the best feeling in the whole world.” And like… WOW did that feel like a breath of fresh air or what?
This whole book felt like that. So many moments of clarity and insight. Everything had purpose, and you see the parallels within January’s life all add up to something in the end.
I am so in love with this book, as more than just a love story. Will be thinking about it for a long time.

Don't even bother. This is awful. Every cliche, every trope… no story, no dialogue, just the author massaging her ego and wasting our time. Please don’t bother. It’s nonsense

If Book Lovers was about the relationship between two sisters, this book is about the relationship between parents and their children. And once again, Emily Henry has managed to break my heart and tend to it in the same book.
