“Dammit, R.E.M. was right: Every single person on the planet had to take turns hurting. Sometimes all you could do was hold on to each other right until the dark spat you back out”

Have you ever come across a book or something in a book that resonates so much with you, your past, your present that you’d considered maybe you could shove this book into people in your life and say “I can’t segregate my thoughts and put them into words but this book gets me”? That’s exactly what I felt like doing

It’s unnerving sometimes to answer simple questions people ask like “How are you?” because “I am good” sounds like the biggest lie you are ever going to say because you are not fine yet you don’t know the ways you are broken to let them help, to let them fix you so you simply lie to them and to yourself.

The reason I am going on with my TED talk here is because I believe this book resonates with most of the people at some point or at several points as you read because we all hold on to the good and try to shove the bad and the ugly parts deep down, when you read it, it will make you feel this quote from the book is true - “It’s okie to show the ugly stuff sometimes, because it’s not going to ruin the beauty of your entire story”

To be honest I picked up this book to be my “easy read”, I’d expected a chick-lit routine and was fully braced to forget it once it’s over. I have done it, judged the book by its cover so I am here advising you all not to do that, it’s a very interesting mix of genres with underlying deep messages wisely hidden behind a creamy layer of rom-com.

I did not cry my lungs out or sat there staring at the walls once I finished the book, but I felt heard, I felt spent, I understood a little part of me better,I felt drained-a good one like after a good therapy session with good cry!

I had high expectations for reading this book because I thoroughly enjoyed “Funny Story” and “Book Lovers.” In fact, I even went as far as purchasing the deluxe edition! It is narrated from the perspective of the female protagonist, January. The premise of the two main characters, both authors with one writing romance and the other writing literary fiction , switching genres on a bet to reignite their creative spark sounded like it would be something different and intriguing. However, I found it to be just okay. The plot focused more on January’s recent loss and Gus’ hang-ups with trust. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if it had been shorter, as it began to feel somewhat repetitive with the recurring instances of miscommunication and lack of trust between the characters over the same issues. Additionally, this book lacked the witty banter that is typically found in an Emily Henry novel. It might still work for readers who enjoy common romance tropes like enemies-to-lovers, grief and loss, and family secrets. In my opinion, it just didn’t rise to the level of other books I have read by her.
