I wonder if women get much out of this book? It was recommended to me by a woman, but it felt like a man's book primarily. Ahhh... what is the difference?! Wonderfully humble story.

I really loved this book. He put so much into words that I could never have described and it helped be able to relate to a memoir about boyhood/manhood.

It was truly a tender book and I bawled like a baby at the end.

Really enjoyed this memoir-very well written, thoughtful, both funny and sad. Feels genuine

Glad I read this memoir. It honestly wasn’t my favorite. It was well written and interesting, but I found it depressing.

How does one become a man? (No, seriously, what do you do?) Moehringer presents a tale of a lost boy raised by a village. (of idiots at times) Yes it glorifies drinking. Yes it glorifies men of ill repute. Yes it is, how do you say,"inconcievable" at times, :-) but the focus on perservearance rings true. (and in spite of other reviews, the women fare best in the story) A book to help a "boy" of any age get a little closer to manhood.

I love this story. Honest and captivating. I'm sad to have finished it, but not sad at how it ended. It was a satisfying read. It's the book I would have wanted to write, the one I wanted to write when I was a bartender. One of my favorite books this year.

Moehringer's book is an entertaining, engrossing read. You almost could feel you were at the bar with him as he tells this story. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this. A compassionate memoir from the male point of view.

Great memoir. Loved the references to the Mets. So many emotionally resonant moments overall and outstanding writing. I did gloss over some of the sports scenes (e.g., description of boxing match). Yet another case where the book is better than the movie!
