I'm seeing reviews expressing disappointment at the lack of scare, the lack of connection to characters, and motivations for characters/ characters' secrets being lame and? I think this is a case of inflated expectations. I didn't go into the book expecting an intelligent psychological thriller, because it isn't. I expected a slasher movie in book form with some mystery, heaps of tropes, and lots of blood, and that's what I got! I enjoyed it while it lasted, I won't read it again, and I'll recommend it if you like a simple slasher story with at least a couple characters who aren't typical cornbread tropes (an openly trans character who isn't bullied and whose transness isn't a big deal to the other characters? cool). It's closer to Scream Queens than a more classic slasher story, but I had a good time.

This one felt like a slasher movie but in book format. I gotta say, for me, the descriptions of the murders as they happen works better in video format… but since it’s a slasher, I tried enjoying it as it was.
The thing is… the reader being there during the murders… it takes most of the guessing about who is the killer, and surprisingly, this book doesn’t take itself too seriously when it comes to the identity of the killer, as we learn if rather early - this was a spin I didn’t see coming, so I kept reading to find out how the author would keep it interesting without the secret.
Sometimes I wondered about our girl’s choices, which seemed rather… dangerous, I guess? But if she was smart and made safe choices there wouldn’t be a book, would it?
Another thing that kept bugging me was how the whole town seems way to chill about a murder spree. Kids went to school. Stuff happened, like, collectively? People went to a stadium for a game. Is it naive of me to think that a town, especially a small town, would be a lot more shaken by something like that?
And I’ve gotta say: the killer disappointed me. His reasons and personality. It felt so dumb! If he was more complicated or we knew more about him I’d be a lot more satisfied with this book, but then again, it wouldn’t be a slasher if it was like that.
It felt a bit like watching the scream series again, and that I loved, for there’s a reason why the scream movies are my absolute favorite.

The mystery was gripping and the romance was interesting, but the plot was missing something for me. The murderer’s “motive” for killing, was not very well explained or thought out and the ending just kind of...happened. It felt so abrupt. There was no real resolution, in my opinion. If the book had been even 10 pages longer, it would be so much more complete.

Eh. As a fan of slasher flicks, I figured this would be up my alley dispute some less than glowing reviews. It wasn’t bad, but I have issues with the way the story was told. The gang doesn’t really do anything productive in the investigation. The build up is spent on this-awful-thing-the-MC-did ..which wasn’t impactful to the main story in the end.
the motive, nonsense. also there was no tension/investigation as to who the killer was. The MCs just see his face… that for me was such a let down. The build up was so wasted on “what Makani did”. It wasn’t good, but she didn’t set up the hazing.. it really wasn’t THAT bad on her part. The weird epiphany in the maze was also too much
