I thought the character development in this book was much better than the last. This felt more natural, as well.

My final read of 2017!

Another great installment in the Tales series! I'm in such awe of Maupin's craft. The books keep getting better, and it has been such a great to follow the lives of all of our core characters.

This had some heartbreak, humor, romance, and sadness. No big mystery this time around, but it was still a great installment. Only three to go in the series now, I don't want it to end!

Every Tales book I read I love Michael even more. He's arguably one of Armistead Maupin's best characters. Others have been regaled to second to his story, most likely because of his popularity. I'm sad there's less Anna Madrigal- she's another one of my favourites. Every mention of Jon I'm sad, but I wish more of Michael and Jon's relationship was shown, like Michael and Thack- love Thack too, by the way. I see Michael's small problems with him, but I often agree with Thack. He's proud and not afraid, something that comes out of the growth of gay liberation, but something important. Michael is also proud of his identity, and I loved
when he shut down Russell Rand after he attempted to seduce him despite his large straight persona.
Brian is extremely on and off, as he always has been for me. Mary Ann, however, has had her flaws on full display. I wish there were more leading women to shake off the feeling of villanized women, and her essential entire being is annoying. She's oblivious and unempathetic, sabotaging her friendships by not considering her action's effect on them, and at the same time being sad she's hurt them without being the bigger person. I hope there are better women in the next book, or else this will be another group of people Armistead Maupin cannot write properly.

Satisfying ending to the series (or at least the main six books) and Maupin's mix of sentimentality and retrospectivity made me look back at the events of the first few books as if I was one of the characters themselves.
My love for Michael and Brian only grew, and I was glad that Mona made an appearance, although I thought Anna Madrigal had lost some of her air of mystique/magic.
Burke's reappearance was a good way to introduce the sense of nostalgia mentioned earlier; the reminiscing about the past was really effective in drawing the series to a close.
Mary Ann on the other hand became a complete and utter BITCH. She has always slightly irked me as a character, in her prissiness and selfishness, and it surprises me that Micheal etc. have stayed friends with her for so long. However, whilst I utterly hated her character, it was done in such a way that was believable and it worked well with the narrative, and I hope that after this book she stays in New York and never comes back.
