pigman's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 87%

E lost interest, and no surprise given the long, flowery descriptions and lack of story. She really enjoyed the first few chapters, though. Me, I didn't like it much from the start, although I'd been excited to read it.

Possibly my favorite book of all time. A beautiful work of literature in every way.

If you like Frog & Toad, this is for you. It's a bawdier, witty raucous romp of a few animal friends. Perfect for children of all ages - I do give it a PG-13 rating for mild language, alcohol consumption, and sexual innuendo

Interesting book and stories. It absolutely deserves its place as one of recommended children's literature. Unfortunately it took me until adulthood to read this. Very sweet and full of important lectures for life.

I've loved just about every version of this story I've encountered but I never bothered to read (or in this case, listen to) the original novel. It's well worth the time and it's something that benefits from being read aloud. Terry Jones, of Monty Python fame, reads this edition and he's nearly perfect. What is usually missing from the adaptations I've seen so far is a lot of vignettes with Ratty and Moley, their relationship to the natural world, their homes and eachother. Friendship is a very important theme throughout, and what is expected of a respectable animal. Toad is hilarious, Moley is adorable and overall it is charming and lovely. Definitely worth listening to if you don't have the time to read, but I definitely encourage everyone to read it.

It unexpectedly took me a whole week to finish this book. I remember reading it with my dad when I was in primary school and we spent half a year struggling to finish it. Now my reading level is much better but I can still perceive why we spent so much time finishing it a few years ago. The descriptive language of Nature in the book is very beautiful and vivid. However, the general plot could be a bit slow-going (I prefer page turners). The adventures of Toad is the best, but the ending just seems too good to be true.
