Extraordinary language. I wanted to highlight the whole thing. Just beautiful and intricate ways of describing everything. Toad is so frustrating, yet so interesting. I was captivated. I can see why this has become timeless and is still popular 112 years after first publication.
I wish I was a kid and had this story read to me exactly like this.
slow-paced
Fun, whimsical adventures of river animals. But I do remember struggling with this book as a child. It’s a story for children, but not really written for children. Maybe it’s the difference between British literature and American, or something written a century ago versus now.

Okay I did not know how absolutely UNHINGED this book was going to be before reading it! I'm not cultured enough to have read this as a child, so The Wind in the Willows was always just the "book that Counselling for Toads was based off of" for me. Finally getting around to reading it now, I thought it was a really cute and enjoyable read, and it was a lot more than the cottagecore friendship story I was expecting. The characters were all lovely and I especially enjoyed reading about Mr. Toad's absolutely insane antics (his motor car obsession to washerwoman saga is the funniest thing ever). I'm sure there are tons of interesting analyses of this book and its portrayal of relationships and whatnot, so if I ever get the extra time on my hands, I'd dive into them with pleasure. Also, I'm hoping to read more classics this year, so I'm off to a great start with this one!
