I was only familiar with the illustrations of this book, so the fact that Mr. Toad was a narcissistic spoiled jerk with ADHD did come as a bit of a surprise.
I would have liked this a lot better if it had given me some reason why some animals were just animals and some were people. Not sure why a toad is physically bigger than a horse and able to ride one, but I lost it when his fingers got wet and… wrinkled. I’m all for whimsy but that’s just silly. I’ll stick with Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Slightly over 4 stars. Surprised me how well written it was, with vibrant and engaging characters. Think I'll come back to this one eventually.

The Wind in the Willows is a classic, whimsical piece of children's literature focused around anthropomorphized animals living in the English countryside. While there is a central plot about the conceited, but good-natured Mr. Toad, much of the story focuses on other goings on in the animal world. What else can I say but that it's a classic for a reason. My reread consisted of reading this daily at bedtime, going one chapter at a time, and I think it would make an excellent bedtime story for a child. Most of the chapters function as little, stand-a-lone stories.
Fun side note, I used to have the audiobook for this and I must have listened to it at least half-a-dozen times because I still hear certain lines in the narrator's voice. It was fun to revisit this childhood favorite and find that it was still a lovely read.

I love this book soso much the vibes are so perfect and it’s like a dunk in a pond except if the world was cold and the pond was warm
