R.F Kuang has quickly become my favorite author. I loved Babel and, inconceivably, I loved The Poppy Wars even more. The author creates a world that feels familiar and alive. The pains, struggles, faiths, and power struggles all feel rounded and grounded.

This author has proven herself to be unafraid to address challenging topics which invite the reader to examine their assumptions and biases. Among the topics addressed are sexual violence, the reliability of history as presented, and, probably most pointedly, the horrors of war and the dangers of "othering" people and refusing to recognize the humanity in an enemy. 

This is all packaged in an engaging fantasy tale perfect for anyone who enjoys stories of heroism. It includes common tropes often seen in the genre such as the unassuming nuisance who is secretly an ancient master and trainer, a protagonist with humble beginnings, and an oppressive evil needing to be resisted. Even so, these are used masterfully by the author and is wonderfully nuanced. Read it, or don't. I'm just a guy and can't tell ya what to do.
