It held my attention. Hard to focus on anything else. But there are very graphic depictions of horrible things.

war doesn't determine who wins. war determines who remains

what was that. I haven't even been able to cry, because I've just been in shock. be careful when entering this book because it's war. and I handle explicit violence pretty well when written, but this has so much more. I had to skip a page.

other than that, it's so immersive. you learn the history of the entire world that's been created and it's heartbreaking. they talk about how in war you either win or lose but then again, does anyone ever win at wars? the characters are one thing first and then they change and you get to see it so clearly sometimes but then others you're just taken aback because "when did they become this?" but you think back and it's been there all along.

it's a made up world that treats real world aspects, and none of them are good. they're presented as crude as they are too. I really liked this book. I thought it'd have a bigger emotional impact, but I think that because of my thinking I haven't let myself sink into any character. if I'd walked in blind I probably would've balled my eyes out.

the magic system and the lore is so unlike anything I've read before and yet it's so what people thought others in our world did. the way everything connects and the way you go about the story is so satisfying to read because it all makes sense as you go. and if it doesn't, it will soon. it leaves you hanging and it makes you question things about the characters and sometimes even yourself.

also fuck you, jun

Wow. I’m a big RF Kuang and this novel had me constantly at the edge of my seat. I felt like I lived years with Rin while reading this novel. What an epic tale with fascinating arcs and complicated characters. I caution some against reading for some heavy themes,
the final 1/4 of the book has some horrifyingly vivid descriptions of war, death,  genocide, and torture that I may never forget
This novel feels like a very violent, dark, and fucked up mixture of Harry Potter (except written by a non TERF) and avatar the last air bender. I usually have no interest  in series but I am excited to read more of Rin’s world of magic and gods. A stupid question, why does this cover have a girl with an arrow? Rin mainly wields a sword. A spoilery/maybe stupid question:
were Altan and Chaghan romantically involved? I hope so
amazing book, can’t wait to read the next
