This book was a beautifully painful journey. I was admittedly a little wary starting this book, as I'd seen a lot of people draw comparisons between it and She Who Became the Sun (which I wasn't a fan of), but luckily my fears were unfounded. The Poppy War follows our main character Rin as she fights against increasingly dire odds. Rin was a fascinating protagonist; I was often frustrated by her recklessness and naivete, but Kuang does such a good job at portraying her thought process that I always understood where she was coming from. Be warned, check trigger warnings because shit gets INTENSE, but it's a tragic truth of the horrors of war that's portrayed so well. Really hooked me, and I need to get my hands on the sequel immediately!

Such an impactful book, I was hooked and it made me think about and explore history I was previously unaware of.

Only reason didn’t get 5 was pacing was a bit off at time, sometimes switches from scenes felt sudden and the scene with Venka I felt was too graphic for what I felt the author was trying to achieve. I am not a writer but I question if there was another way that we could hear Venka and the other women’s stories, I want to hear them they are important but as a survivor it was very triggering and something very quick and unexpected. I question if there was another way to highlight these women’s stories is all.
